Enhanced External Counterpulsation (EECP)

Enhanced External Counterpulsation (EECP)  is a non-invasive treatment for angina, a severe chest pain caused by blocked arteries. Known as “Natural Bypass,” EECP improves blood flow and oxygen supply to the heart, reducing angina frequency and intensity. It’s a viable alternative for patients not eligible for heart surgery.

How Does It Work?

EECP (Enhanced External Counterpulsation) treatment at V-Wellness involves the patient lying on a raised bed with external inflatable cuffs attached to their lower legs, upper legs, and buttocks. The cuffs inflate and deflate in sync with the patient’s heartbeat, guided by an electrocardiogram. The treatment lasts 1 hour per session, 3-5 times a week, over 7-9 weeks (totaling about 35 hours).

Answers to Common Questions
About Enhanced External Counterpulsation (EECP)

EECP is recommended for individuals with chronic chest pain who haven’t qualified for bypass surgery, stenting, or other invasive procedures. It is also an option when all other treatment options have been exhausted.

Who Can Benefit from EECP Treatment

EECP treatment is beneficial for people with cardiovascular problems and diabetic patients as it helps reduce insulin resistance and improve arterial function. It is also beneficial for patients with renal failure, stroke rehabilitation, and those seeking overall wellness and preventative care.

Are there any side effects of EECP?

EECP is mostly safe with minimal discomfort. The main irritation may occur at the areas where the inflatable cuffs are placed, but this can be alleviated with rubber trousers. However, EECP is not recommended for those with recent cardiac catheterisation, severe high blood pressure, valvular disease, or other serious heart conditions.

Is EECP effective?

EECP is effective for relieving angina, improving working capacity, and reducing the frequency of angina attacks. While it is not a substitute for open-heart bypass surgery, its effectiveness depends on the severity of the patient’s condition and requires a thorough assessment before treatment.
